Today we bring you a story that comes out of a pharmaceutical company in the United Kingdom. This story has a moral to it, and a happy ending.

This company had been providing its mobile workers with Blackberry devices for their business Internet connections, but wanted to upgrade them to iOS devices, so the employees could connect at Wi-Fi hotspots, and increase productivity. The company, however, didn’t realize how much this enhanced connectivity was going to cost.

iPhone vs. BlackberryEmployees took to the iOS devices with vigor, and started videoconferencing, using VoIP, and collaborating with clients and fellow employees using a multitude of productivity and communication apps. Because they were used to making business Internet connections via cellular data on Blackberry, employees continued to use cellular data instead of connecting at a mobile hotspot. Then the bills came in (and where you might think that the fun stops).

Jumping through hoops to find a mobile hotspot
In the business case study, A Prescription for Success, you’ll read about how this pharmaceutical company initially turned to its mobile provider for answers, but the provider gave them options that were unacceptable. The company checked into using per-use Wi-Fi passes, but realized that mobile workers would often be forced to buy day-passes that expired after 24 hours’ use, even if the employee only needed to connect for a few minutes.

Wasteful spending for business Internet connections was not something the company could tolerate. It looked as though the move to iOS was going to be too difficult for employees and too expensive for the company to sustain. It was then that this company found iPass. After extensive testing, with over 3,500 sessions at mobile hotspots in 20 countries(!), this company was thoroughly convinced that iPass Open Mobile was the way to go.

Using iPass to access global Wi-Fi hotspots may save over $100K
This pharmaceutical company in the UK put iPass to work for its mobile workers, and now, they’re projecting that iPass will save the company more than $100,000 (€75,363 / £65,748) annually.
